A long time ago when roads were dirt..... mud was unavoidable, in those times Boot Scrapers were actually built into railings. 

This particular design is from a Charleston SC collection.  

The pineapple finials on top have an interesting origin.  It is told that when sailors went out to sea their wives were not permitted to have callers.  When the man of the house returned from sea they would spear a pineapple into the fence post signifying  all were welcome.  This tradition has stimulated the use of pineapple carvings on fence posts and railings.  Our Boot/scrapper/brush welcome all to your home and politely reminds them to wipe their feet!
